Primary Sets

Primary Sets

Primary Sets are also known as Administration Sets. Administration Sets have a variety of purposes although the set design is very similar. The purpose of the set dictates the length of time it may safely be used. The primary set can be selected with varying drop size and length, depending on the intended use, the patients condition, & the rate of infusion. A primary set is typically the main administration set used to carry the infusing solution from the container to the patient. Primary Sets are usually 60" or longer in length, & can be used with IV pumps or used by themselves for gravity infusions. These sets should be replaced no more frequently than 72-hour intervals. In summary the difference in these sets is: the Length (78, 89,100) Drip Chamber (15,20,60 drop) the Number of Injection Sites (Y sites).
